The Somnath Temple is one of the greatest important pilgrimage sites for Hindus in India. It is in the town of Veraval in the western state of Gujarat. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva & is supposed to have been initially built in ancient times. However, the temple has a rich history and has been ruined and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries.
Somnath Temple History
According to legend, the temple was initially built by the moon god, Som, in gold. Later, it was rebuilt in silver by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and then again in wood by Lord Krishna. The current structure was built in 1951 under the patronage of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India.
The temple is renowned for its architecture, which combines elements of both Hindu and Islamic styles. The temple has a shikhar (spire) that is 155 feet tall and is made of gold.
Somnath Temple Pooja Timings
The temple is open daily for darshan (worship) from 6:00 am to 9:30 pm. Numerous poojas (worship rituals) are achieved at the temple throughout the day. Some of the important poojas include:
- Mangala Aarti: This is the first pooja of the day and is performed at 6:00 am.
- Abhishek Pooja: This is a ritualistic bathing of the shiva linga with milk, honey, and other sacred substances. It is performed from 7:00 am to 11:00 am.
- Bhog Pooja: This ritual offering food to the deity is performed from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm.
- Sandhya Aarti: This is the evening pooja and is performed at sunset.
- Shayan Aarti: This is the final pooja of the day and is performed at 9:00 pm.
